Eastern Samar is famous in Philippine history is Homonhon Island off the coast of Guiuan, the province’s southern-most town, facing both the Pacific Ocean and the Leyte Gulf where Magellan first landed. Guiuan by itself is a quaint town composed of several Island-Barangays, each with its own story to tell. Sulangan is a Pilgrim center of St. Anthony of Padua; Tubabao Island played host to the Russian Refugees in the 1930’s; and Calico-an Island is the surfing capital of Eastern Visayas.Going up north brings you to Borongan City, the capital of the province with its rich tradition in culinaria and literature.

A hike through the Borongan-Llorente Closed-canopy Forest, the largest rainforest left intact in the whole country is a challenge to surmount.Taft is the home of the Philippine Eagle with a sanctuary serving as its natural habitat – a wildlife facility where one can study birds. In the towns facing Leyte Gulf, one can visit Balangiga, the place of the one of the bloodiest encounters in the Filipino American War. Nearby is the town of Lawaan where the majestic Amandaraga Falls, the tallest waterfalls in the country, and its 4 sister falls reside.
